Prescripton Drug Take Back Program
Home > Support Services > Prescripton Drug Take Back Program
According to the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (“DEA”), most abused prescription drugs come from family and friends. They want you to know, that if you lose control of your old, unused prescriptions, you could be a drug dealer and not even know it. The DEA has described unused or expired prescription medication as a “public safety” issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose and abuse.
- Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor’s supervision.
- The non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in the United States. The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends—and the home medicine cabinet.
- Unused prescription drugs thrown into the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold.
- Just as troubling, every day prescription drugs are dumped down drains, toilets, and in garbage. Unused drugs that are flushed contaminate the water supply. Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment.
In 2012, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office began its collaboration with the DEA to collect and destroy unused and expired prescription drugs throughout Cook County. Sheriff Dart directed his office to have permanent collection boxes to be installed at each of the circuit court houses as well as the County Building to permit local residents to properly anonymously dispose of their prescriptions at each location while ensuring proper control of these drugs.
The Sheriff’s Prescription Drug Take Back Program also began assisting location towns and villages as well as Chicago wards by sponsoring Pharmaceutical Take-Back events. Since 2013, the Sheriff’s Prescription Drug Take Back Program has partnered with the Village of River Forest to collect more than 650 pounds of unused, expired pharmaceutical drugs ranging from cold relief and asthma medications to other over-the-counter medications. Fire Department Chief James Eggert has led these efforts for River Forest. With the DesPlaines River nearby as well as the local water table, Chief Eggert’s leadership is helping our community promote safe water practices and eliminate unnecessary drugs that can be otherwise misused in our communities.
Keep our drinking water and community safe by bringing your outdated prescription drugs to designated Sheriff’s Prescription Drug Take Back Collection Boxes located throughout Cook County at local police departments/public safety buildings, district court houses, or at the County Building.
