Cook County Sheriff Civil Process

The Civil Division of the Court Services Department is comprised of the Eviction, Levy & Warrant Unit, the Civil Process Unit and the Clerical Unit. The division has approximately 250 sworn and civilian employees assigned to eight different facilities throughout the county. The deputy sheriffs working in these units handle the service of summonses, warrants, orders of protection and eviction orders.

The Eviction, Levy & Warrant Unit serves as the chief enforcement "arm" of the Circuit Court of Cook County. Duties of this unit include: the execution of court orders which call for the forcible removal of subjects who are unlawfully in possession of real property; the location and apprehension of subjects pursuant to arrest warrants; the seizing and dispensing of personal property; the recovery and re-location of children pursuant to child custody; the enforcement of orders related to the Illinois Domestic Violence Act and any other matter that falls under the jurisdiction of the court. This unit performed the following in 1999:

The Civil Process Unit is responsible for the timely service of process filed with the Sheriff of Cook County. The officers of the Civil Division are responsible for all of the duties engendered in the booking of offenders arrested for violations of criminal law, incidential to their normal duties.

The Clerical Unit is responsible for the processing of all of the orders and process received by the Sheriff. The Clerical Unit prepares about 3,000 documents for service and/or execution on a daily basis.
