IN SAVING INMATE’S LIFE

Friday, August 29, 2014A team of five Cook County Jail staff members helped save the life of an inmate found unresponsive in his dorm, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.

At approximately 11:55 p.m. on Wednesday, Correctional Officer Clifford Brisseus found a 42-year-old inmate unresponsive in a Division 2 dorm after other detainees notified him that the inmate was having trouble breathing.

Officer Brisseus immediately began CPR and Officer Cecilia Patterson called for assistance. Lt. Hubert Thompson, Sgt. Tariq Lucas and Sgt. Lonnie Hollis responded to assist. In addition to CPR, an automated external defibrillator (AED) was used. CPR was continued until the paramedics arrived. The inmate had a pulse and was breathing when he was taken to the hospital.

“This is just one example of the real life-and-death situations our correctional officers often face,” Sheriff Dart said. “I commend these officers for their quick and life-saving response.”

The inmate, who is being held at the jail on a residential burglary charge, remains at an area hospital for treatment.
