Thursday, September 18, 2014The Cook County Sheriff’s Work Alternative Program (SWAP) this past weekend helped create a safer route for elementary school children in Maywood, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said today.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, and Sunday, Sept. 14, a total of 21 offenders in the SWAP program worked to clean up areas around vacant properties in the 600 block of 16th Avenue, in the 800 block of 17th Avenue, and at one location at the intersection of Lake Street and First Avenue. Offenders cut grass and overgrown brush to create a safer route for children to walk to and from a nearby elementary school.

Maywood Police contacted the Sheriff’s Office earlier this month to request assistance with this project.

Past SWAP projects have included cleaning up a playground and baseball field in Ford Heights and cleaning up abandoned property in Dolton.

SWAP is designed to reduce the jail population by providing the courts with an alternative to sentencing for misdemeanor and traffic offenders. Instead of serving time in the Cook County Jail, they are sentenced to manual labor supervised by sworn Sheriff’s officers.

SWAP crews work on labor-intensive projects for municipalities, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations. The program runs seven days a week.
