$80,000 BOND FOR SOLICITATION OF A CHILD
Thursday, October 28, 2010— Bond has been set at $80,000 for a Chicago man who thought he was soliciting sex from an underage teen, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Thursday.
Eric Avila, 29, of the 3000 block of Diversey has been charged with Indecent Solicitation of a Child, a Class 3 felony carrying between two to five years in prison. As special conditions of his bond, Avila may not use the internet and must not have contact with anyone under the age of 18.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Police Child Exploitation Unit began investigating Avila after he made contact with an undercover officer posing as a 14-year-old girl in a Yahoo chat room. Avila initiated the chat, believing he was communicating with an underage teen. Avila told the undercover officer he was a 29-year-old male from Chicago, and chatted with her on Yahoo for a number of weeks during the month of October. During the chats, among other things, Avila asked the officer if she was interested in engaging in sex, and told her that her age did not matter. The undercover officer also had contact with Avila via cell phone.
Based on the communications, vice officers set up a sting on October 26th. Avila told the officer posing as a teen that he would pick her up and take her to a hotel where they would have sex. When Avila pulled up to meet the undercover officer, they had a short conversation, and vice officers waiting at the scene took him into custody.
Avila appeared in Maywood bond court on Tuesday. His next court date is November 2nd in Maywood.
