SOUTH SUBURBAN MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER
Wednesday, May 1, 2013 —Bond was set at $1,000,000 for Harlandez Meals, 27, of the 4100 block of West Lincoln Lane in Robbins. Meals was charged with first degree murder in connection with the 2011 death of Scott Soderlund, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.
On July 22, 2010 at approximately 9:00pm, Scott Soderlund, was outside Pop's liquor store located at 3426 W. 135th Street in Robbins, IL. Soderlund was then approached by Meals, and a brief argument ensued. Meals then began punching Soderlund in the face numerous times. Soderlund was able to break free from Meals and run westbound towards Central Park Avenue.
Meals was able to run down and catch Soderlund at Central Park Avenue and again started punching Soderlund in the face, knocking Soderlund to the ground. While Soderlund was on the ground Meals continued to punch and kick Soderlund in the head until police sirens were heard. Meals then fled the area on foot. Soderlund was transported to a local hospital where he ultimately died from the injuries sustained in this attack on March 9, 2011.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Soderlund’s death a homicide.
On April 29th Meals was arrested by the Cook County Sheriff’s Detectives and murder charges were approved the following day.
Harlandez Meals has 16 previous arrests, including battery causing bodily harm, attempting to elude police, and various possession charges.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the Robbins Police Department for their work to ensure that justice prevailed.
