Monday, June 6, 2011 —Officials from the Cook County Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement leaders will be kicking off Leg 5 of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics on Tuesday, June 7th.  The Sheriff's Office is hosting the kickoff ceremony in the parking lot of Malcolm X College, 1900 W. Van Buren, Chicago at 8:30 a.m., with the run beginning at 9 a.m.
This is the 25th anniversary of the run here in Illinois and the Sheriff's Office was one of the founding Leg Leaders for the event.  Police personnel from the Sheriff's Office, as well as the Chicago Police Department, the IRS, and a host of other law enforcement agencies will be participating.

Also in attendance will be Special Olympics athletes who are relatives of local law enforcement officers.  The presentation of the torch to the Special Olympics athletes will occur Tuesday and they, in turn, will pass it along to officers running the first leg.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is an annual event held in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and 20 nations throughout the world. The run generates more than $3.5 million annually for Special Olympics, an agency that enables more than one million children and adults with developmental disabilities to participate in year-round sports activities.
