TINLEY PARK MAN CHARGED WITH POSSESSION OF UNLICENSED CIGARETTES
Monday, August 5, 2013
— A 22-year-old Tinley Park man received a $100,000 bond today after he was charged with possessing more than a 1,000 packs of contraband cigarettes, a felony, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said.
Approximately 10:10 p.m. on Friday, a Justice Police officer pulled over Ahmed Damoony for speeding in the 8100 block South 88th Avenue in Justice. During a consented search of Damoony’s vehicle, the Justice Police officer found 2,020 packs of cigarettes without the Cook County tax stamps.
The investigation was turned over to Cook County Sheriff’s Police detectives, who learned that Damoony would buy cigarettes in St. Louis and then would sell them in south suburban Cook County.
Cook County loses $3 for every cigarette pack sold without a tax stamp.
His next court date is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 6 at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
In addition to the criminal charge, Damoony was fined $51,000 by the Cook County Department of Revenue.
Sheriff Dart reminds the public that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in a court of law.
