POLICE SEEK SUPSECTS IN
Wednesday, September 1, 2010— Police are searching for a group of men who attacked a Des Plaines man and stole his van, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Wednesday.
According to the victim’s wife, her 39-year-old husband had been trying to fix the back door of his vehicle in the early morning hours of Aug. 29th, and he was in and out of his home on the 8900 block of Steven Street. Around 4 a.m. the victim was sleeping inside the van when four to six men attacked him. The offenders punched and stabbed the victim, who was taken to Lutheran General Hospital for treatment. The victim suffered stab wounds to the right elbow, upper calf, and torso, a laceration to the left eye, and a possible fracture of the bone between the eye socket and nose. The victim is currently in stable condition.
Approximately two hours after the attack, patrol officers observed what appeared to be a dumpster fire near the 9800 block of Milwaukee Avenue in Des Plaines. Upon closer inspection, police saw the victim’s van engulfed in flames. Officers contacted the North Maine Fire Department, and arson investigators from the Glenview Fire Department also responded to the scene.
A Sheriff’s Office evidence technician arrived to process the crime scene, and a K9 unit was called in to track the suspects. The K9 was able to follow the scent to the Golf Terrace Apartment Complex, where the track ended.
Police are currently reviewing surveillance footage, and are asking anyone with information on the case to please contact detectives at 708-865-4700.
