ON YOU TUBE
Wednesday, March 11, 2009 — Three female Proviso East High School students have been charged in connection with the beating of a fellow student in the school’s cafeteria that was taped and later posted to the popular website You Tube, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.
The three sophomore girls involved in the fight are all 16 and all live in Melrose Park. Two girls were charged with felony aggravated battery and felony mob action and the third, who admitted to filming the incident, was charged with mob action. All three girls were charged by Cook County Sheriff’s Police detectives yesterday, Tuesday, March 10.
The fight occurred Feb. 19 in the cafeteria at the school, 807 S. First Avenue, unincorporated Proviso Township, about 12:40 p.m. In the video, one offender is seen walking up behind the victim, a 16-year-old sophomore, grabbing her and slamming her down on a lunch table. The chaotic video later shows the victim on the floor being beaten and kicked as students gather around to watch.
The victim sustained injuries to her head and neck and was later treated at a local hospital. The main offender told police the reason she attacked the girl was because she just didn’t like the victim.
The two offenders charged with felony aggravated battery are currently being held in custody at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. The third offender was released to the custody of her parents and will be petitioned into Juvenile Court.
Video of the incident has been posted on You Tube multiple times. All but one of the postings remains on the site. That posting, however, has been viewed more than 2,000 times to date.
